Start with your operator’s kit list. What is supplied varies by trip, and equipment needs depend on the route and conditions. This checklist helps you organise the questions and the things to bring.
What to wear for canyoning and hiking
Ask which closed shoes are suitable for the trip. They need to stay secure and provide grip on the terrain; expect them to get wet. A beach sandal is not a substitute for the shoes your operator requests.
Confirm the clothing arrangement before arrival. If a wetsuit is supplied, ask what to wear underneath and whether anything is needed over it. Choose clothing for movement rather than photographs.
Equipment to confirm with your tour operator
A canyoning equipment package may include a helmet, harness, descent equipment and a wetsuit, but inclusions are not identical across operators. Ask about sizes, fit, flotation and any bag used in the canyon.
Do not buy technical equipment just because a general packing list mentions it. The operator should tell you what is required for their activity and how the supplied equipment will be used.
Water, food and personal items
Follow the operator’s advice on drinking water, food and how to carry them. Pack only what you need inside the gorge. Leave jewellery and unnecessary valuables behind in an appropriate secure place.
Discuss any personal medication or other essential item with the operator so it can be carried appropriately. Ask before taking a phone or camera into the canyon; a waterproof case does not prevent loss or damage.
What to bring for after your activity
Have a towel, a dry change and footwear for the journey home. Ask where those items can stay while you are on the activity. Keep wet gear separate afterwards.
